Frequently Asked Questions

Donations

Is there a minimum donation?

No! Donations of any amount, large or small, are greatly appreciated. Smaller donations can be specified if you would like them to go to students or to administrative costs.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes. BECA is a 501(c)(3). Money donated is a charitable donation and anything you donate is tax-deductible.

Can I sponsor an individual student with my donation?

Yes, you can. Please check out our Make a Donation page to find out what is needed. Where the donation of a sponsor does not fully cover a student’s educational needs, that donation will be combined with other partial scholarships to make sure we have the full amount needed for each child.

How can I make my donation?

Donations are currently accepted through checks or Venmo. Visit our Make a Donation page to find out specifically how you can donate.

Can I donate materials/supplies themselves rather than a cash donation?

You may donate materials/supplies by contacting Katie Walther at 801-669-3173 to set us a delivery method.

About BECA

How did BECA start?

After going to Guatemala with Humanitize Expeditions on medical trips, volunteers saw firsthand the need the people there had for food, nutrition programs, and tuition for school. Realizing that education was the most impactful way to make a sustainable difference, BECA was born.

What kinds of students does BECA serve?

BECA serves students in schools ranging from elementary to post-high school education and trade schools located in the impoverished highlands of Guatemala.

What is BECA’s mission?

To help families break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty through education. Focusing in the highlands of Guatemala, BECA strives to empower individuals with education so they can change their future and that of their families.

What is BECA’s goal?

Our goal is to raise enough funds to ensure that every student admitted into our scholarship program gets continued sponsorship until they receive the education for their needed or desired career. We also aspire to add students to the program as finances and volunteers permit.

MISC.

How can I follow the stories of the students who are sponsored?

We have several stories we’d love to share with you! Visit our Meet the Students or Meet the Sponsors pages to read how individual lives have been changed through BECA.

What other ways can I help or volunteer?

You can start by liking, commenting, and sharing on our Instagram and Facebook pages! When making purchases at Amazon, start at smile.Amazon.com and choose BECA (based in Provo, UT) as your charitable organization. We also need volunteers who can help fundraise, match students to sponsors, find new donors, interpret between Spanish and English, and interview families in the scholarship selection process. Please contact Katie Walther at 801-669-3173 to offer your help.

What other expenses does BECA have?

BECA has no paid positions. Everyone, from the board to the interpreters, is a volunteer. When you donate to sponsor a student, 100% of that donation goes to that student. There are minimal administrative costs (such as bank fees or travel stipends for our Guatemalan administrators) which are covered by donations made specifically for that purpose.
